New Music Friday: 20th April 2018

Its Friday so its time for five brand new tracks to get their first spin on the hour every hour from 9am. We’ll keep playing these tracks on New Zealand Net Radio, home of streaming radio ad free 24/7 throughout New Zealand.

  Alae – Stone Cold

An Auckland (New Zealand) 3 piece band, this single is a followup to their debut “Too Strung Up”. They said on the NZ Music site:

‘Stone Cold’ is a celebration of the complexities of new love and the conflicting emotions that arise. Introduced with a delicate guitar line, a building groove and an airy, effervescent chorus it’s an aural embodiment of an emotional journey laid bare. Vocalist Alex Farrell-Davey explains – “Love is a consuming and confronting high – it can alter your perspective on everything. Once the hit sinks in, paranoia and the second guessing begins. The song goes on to accept the conflict as part of the whole experience and finally brushes it off in the chorus -“There’s all these things that I want to do with you by my side. For the first time in my entire life, well, I don’t mind.”

Eliott – Over & Over

Another very fresh artist, this is Eliott’s second single off her forthcoming debut EP. The Australian artist said:

‘Over and Over’ is a slow-burning electronic ballad about a relationship which is “not necessarily a romantic love, but a relationship between two people that no matter how much time they spend apart, days, months, years, they’ve always got your back – a kind of love you rarely find.”

NOTD – I Wanna Know (Ft Bea Miller)

Love the album cover of this new single from the Stockholm, Sweden duo. They’ve teamed up with the talented Bea Miller (19 years old but released no less than 3 EPs last year!) for this cool little number.

Princess Nokia – Look Up Kid

Off her new mixtape A Girl Cried Red this is an interesting number. We don’t play a lot of Hip Hop/Rap but maybe this is mislabelled as such – its got a great tune, nice guitar riff and a bit of spunk. See what you think … the mixtape is awesome, streets ahead of some rap artists that dominate the charts (in our humble opinion of course!).

ZAYN – Let Me

This British artist is making waves and has released this second single off an upcoming album. Its a slick catchy number.

Album of the Week: 30 Seconds To Mars – America

New Zealand Net Radio plays a song from our #albumoftheweek every hour from 9am to 12pm Monday to Friday. Listen in @tunein at https://tunein.com/radio/New-Zealand-Net-Radio-s305138/

Jared Leto started out as lead in My So Called Life (a forgettable 90s teen comedy) and founded 30 Seconds To Mars in 2002 to some fanfare. The band wasn’t a flash in the pan, and although his acting career has continued “Thirty Seconds” (the number turned to a word along the way) have now released six albums with this new effort. The album deals with US politics today without much subtlety. The reviews have been fairly cool – one compares this to the “tasteless gruel” of Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots. Fortunately we (along with the people who have kept songs from Evolve in pretty much every top 20 since it was released, and those who saw this album selling more units than Cardi B’s unavoidable debut album) actually quite like this contemporary rock sound. Let’s work through the tracks this week. We’ll kick off with an instrumental called Monolith after 9 on Monday.

New Music Friday: 13th April 2018

Its Friday so its time for five brand new tracks to get their first spin on the hour every hour from 9am. We’ll keep playing these tracks on New Zealand Net Radio, home of streaming radio ad free 24/7 throughout New Zealand.

Hatchie – Sugar & Spice

This lass from Brisbane (real name Hariette Pilbeam) released her first single, “Try” last year. This is about her third single and is great pop dealing with difficult times in relationships.

LOVA – Insecurities

The second single from this Swedish artist – some of her comments in this article.

Mansionair – Violet City

More Australian music, and a new release from ‘alt-electric’ trio Mansionair.

The Kite String Tangle – The Heights of Trees

Finally continuing the Australian theme comes a new EP out today called The Kite String Tangle Presents: In A Desperate Moment. We like this track from the electronic artist, following on from his excellent debut album last year. Good writeup here.

Tove Styrke – On The Low

Featured Album: Elton John & Co – Revamped

New Zealand Net Radio plays a song from our #featuredalbum every hour from 9am to 12pm Monday to Friday. Listen in @tunein at https://tunein.com/radio/New-Zealand-Net-Radio-s305138/

Our #featuredalbum this week is Revamp: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their collaboration. And what a career they have had. It has already yielded a 25 year celebration (Two Rooms from 1993) but this incredible body of music is worth revisiting. Like the earlier effort it is really interesting hearing how contemporary pop artists have interpreted his songs. Watch the trailer for a bit more background from the contributors:

Less well publicised is another album Restoration which features interpretations by country artists. We’ll try and sneak on a few of those numbers this week as well. Listen every morning from 9am for an hourly track from Revamp.

And the track list:

  1. Bennie and the Jets (Elton John, P!nk and Logic)
  2. We All Fall In Love Sometimes (Coldplay)
  3. I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues (Alessia Cara)
  4. Candle In The Wind (Ed Sheeran)
  5. Tiny Dancer (Florence and the Machine)
  6. Someone Saved My Life Tonight (Mumford and Sons)
  7. Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word (Mary J. Blige)
  8. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (Q-Tip and Demi Lovato)
  9. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (The Killers)
  10. Daniel (Sam Smith)
  11. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Miley Cyrus)
  12. Your Song (Lady Gaga)
  13. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Queens of the Stone Age)
