Prog never really went away, it just kept quietly getting better — and this afternoon’s show is all about proving it, pulling almost entirely from the fresh crop of 2025 and 2026. Big Big Train roll in with “Counting Stars” from their February concept album Woodcut, that flagship English sound still soaring; Steve Hackett lends his unmistakable guitar to Djabe’s jazz‑tinged “Stone Age Tea”; and David Gilmour reminds everyone how it’s done with a live cut from The Luck and Strange Concerts. Norway’s Leprous bring a moment of atmospheric, emotive beauty with “Silently Walking Alone,” proof that modern prog can hit hard without ever raising its voice. Add Germany’s Finally George and the gloriously unhinged Canadian prog‑funk of Brass Camel, and you’ve got a snapshot of a genre very much alive and pushing forward.
We keep the momentum up from there. Coheed and Cambria return with “Searching for Tomorrow,” the widescreen lead single from this year’s Vaxis – Act III: The Father of Make Believe; Haken bring the muscle on “in a fever dream,” their heaviest, most dynamic new music in years; and Peter Gabriel’s shimmering “Been Undone” rounds things out with a bit of art‑rock class. Epic runtimes, odd time signatures, big ideas and bigger choruses — settle in, turn it up, and let the long‑form magic do its thing. This is Prog Rock Friday, and this is the new stuff.
