Album of the Week: Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour

We enjoyed High Horses on New Music Friday, now let’s meander through the whole album.

Macy’s career spans over a decade, with her first major label studio album being released in 2013 (Same Trailer Different Park) and she has been nominated and won plenty of awards including a Grammy nomination and has won the Academy of Country Music best album award for Same Trailer.

This new album clearly belongs in the Country genre but makes a clear effort to break through to pop as well, especially in the Bee Gees inspired High Horses. The lyrics are pretty cool too. Some of the material is a bit of a celebration of getting stoned which is a shame but aside from that is a great selection of songs. We’re going to enjoy poring through them this week.

Album of the Week: George Ezra – Staying At Tamara’s

You’ve spent a year or so touring and promoting a massive album (number 3 in sales in the UK for 2014). If you’re George Ezra (@george_ezra)you understandably take some time out. Last year he headed to Barcelona to an Airbnb owned by the Tamara of this album’s title and spent a month working on these songs. Some critics have described them as “unflinchingly polite” and that this album will “doubtless be huge” whilst venomously making what sound like virtues to us into criticisms (The Guardian). We’ll enjoy these songs on their merits, working through the tracklist during our morning 9am – 12 pm programme. Hope you enjoy them! Oh and the tracklist:

Just Added: Whole Damn Mess – Anywhere Without You

We’re a few months behind the times but we’ve just come across this great duo/band from Florida in the US (the single was released last December!). This is a great song – we look forward to exploring some other music from Whole Damn Mess’ (@wholedamnmess) debut album The Queen and the Outcast.

Now Playing Highlight: David Gray – Be Mine

A single from 2003 this song from one of the best artists of the 1990s reached number 23 on the UK charts. David had to work to achieve success – his breakthrough album White Ladder was his fourth effort. The album this track was featured on, A New Day At Midnight entered the UK charts at number one and reached number six in New Zealand. Its been a couple of years since we’ve seen new music from Mr Gray – more please!

Now Playing Highlight: Robert Palmer – Addicted to Love

This song just can’t help getting your head nodding. Featured on Robert Palmer’s 1985 album Riptide the song was released as a single in 1986. An iconic 80s song it features distinctive lead guitar from Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor. It hit No. 1 in Australia and the US and peaked at No. 2 in the New Zealand chart, kept from the top spot by Sailing Away, the ‘supergroup’ song promoting our 1987 America’s Cup challenge. Addicted to Love has certainly stood the test of time!

Sabrina Carpenter is another pop singer with a Disney Channel background, created with British producer Jonas Blue. The song is from a forthcoming album, nice piece of pop.

Halsey ft Big Sean and Stefflon Don – Alone

 

 

 

 

 

This is a bit of ‘old’ and new – this song was featured on Halsey’s album from last year hopeless fountain kingdom this remis features Big Sean and UK rapper Stefflon Don. This was a good song already, described by Halsey as “Jay-Z in Great Gatsby vibes”.

Tyron Hapi & Liam Ferrari – I Like The Way

 

 

 

 

 

Great production from Tyron Hapi and Liam Ferrari’s vocals charm as usual. Hailing from Australia (but is Hapi a Maori surname?) these artists are really going places – Tyron’s recent track Anyway ft Mimosa went gold.

Leon Bridges – Bet Ain’t Worth The Hand

 

 

 

 

 

Leon Bridge’s debut album, 2015’s Coming Home was criticised for being a bit too backward looking (not a problem here! This song off his forthcming album Good Thing showcases his rich voice with great production.

The Decembrists – Once In My Life

 

 

 

 

 

From their new album I’ll Be Your Girl this track has the foundation of folk rock the band are known for, but with a synth rev up from producer John Congleton. Keeps things interesting …

Just Added: Sons of Zion – Drift Away

These guys have been around for a few years and have hit our playlist with this nice new cruisy pop single. Hovering near the top of the iTunes New Zealand chart it has the makings of a ‘smash hit’. They’ve toured the world and have accumulated over 12 million streams on Spotify, no mean feat. Their first album was released back in 2009 and a lot of their music has a reggae vibe – this one is more ‘poppy’ and we really like it!
