The O’Jays are releasing what they say will be their last album (appropriately titled The Last Word) in April, after a break of 15 years. This seems like an opportune moment to celebrate the music of these major artists of the 1970s. Their biggest hit was “Love Train” in 1973 but they were actually formed back in 1958, and had their first chart appearance in 1963. Their big breakthrough was when they began working with producers and songwriters Gamble & Huff on 1972’s album Back Stabbers. The hits kept flowing through the 1970s – traks such as “Put Your Hands Together”, “For The Love of Money” and “I Love Music”. We’ll enjoy these and more through the week in our Spotlight Artist slot.

Avalanche City

Avalanche City aka Dave Baxter is from Auckland, New Zealand. He recently released his third album My Babylon, yet another great collection of what is termed ‘indie folk’. His three albums (first was Our New Life Above the Ground in 2011) are filled with great melodic songs, and “Inside Out” off his second 2015 album We Are For The Wild Places was an international hit. Look forward to checking out more of his music this week.

Well we could complain about the grammar in the album title – hey we just did! – but this is a big country release, and we don’t mind a bit of country – well mainly the Americana kind. Duo
Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard have produced their fourth album with a host of featured artists. Reviews have been a bit mixed but this is a nice selection of pop – country.

Vampire Weekend from New York started out in 2006. Their self-titled first album from 2008 received critical acclaim for its diverse musical influences and debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200, not bad for a first album. Since then they’ve gone on to release Contra (2010), Modern Vampires of the City (2013) and soon to come Father of the Bride. We’re enjoying one of the early singles “Harmony Hall” at the moment – this week we’ll take the chance to look back over their interesting career.

Album of the Week: Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited

Bobby Gentry is one of those intriguing legends. A smash hit off her first album with “Ode to Billie Joe”, she was one of the first female artists to write her own songs. She produced seven studio albums, and performed until the late 1970s until she lost interest in performing. That’s it. No reunion tours, anniversary tours etc.

The world was her oyster when she produced her second album The Delta Sweete. Pitchfork brilliantly described it as “full of technicolor arrangements, oddball collages, and playful sexual innuendos”.

Now Mercury Rev (formed in Buffalo, New York in the late 1980s), described as psych-pop masters have turned to this lost gem. Reshaping the songs with a string of big name singers (Phoebe Bridgers, Beth Orton and Lucinda Williams amongst them) we’re in for something a bit different this week – should be a treat!
